This year’s HIMSS is upon us, and attendees have high hopes that the conference will deliver on its mission: to drive innovation and transformation in healthcare, Forbes reports.

The topic of healthcare is certainly a hot one these days, as “tech giants and other outsiders continue placing their bets on healthcare and smaller, innovation-driven companies are seeking to claim larger roles in changing, disrupting and owning many aspects of the industry.”

The HIMSS conference aims to embody this change and to offer attendees opportunities to learn from global experts in a “roll up your sleeves” format. The expo’s keynote lineup includes a variety of speakers, with some major players set to take the podium:

  • Seema Verma, Administrator, Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services
  • Hal Wolf, HIMSS President and CEO
  • Eric Schmidt, Executive Chairman, Alphabet, Inc. (parent company of Google)
  • Earvin “Magic” Johnson, Jr.

Yes, when we said “major players” we weren’t kidding.

Best-case scenario is that the 45,000+ health IT professionals, clinicians, executives and vendors from around the world (around 40 countries will be represented) accomplish a few things:

  1. Make key connections
  2. Receive exceptional education
  3. Become entrenched in the technology itself
  4. Come out with real solutions to bring back home to their institutions and clinical practices

But Forbes offers another key insight to the hopeful success of this year’s expo:

“We all spend a good deal of time talking about patient-centricity and how humanity can be lost to technological innovation. What HIMSS offers us is the chance to engage, network and collaborate with each other and find human solutions that are empowered by technology—not the other way around!”

There's one other essential component to HIMSS, and that's the human side.

Tech is infiltrating into every landscape and proving how innovation can change systems for the better. As we see big names like Amazon, Berkshire Hathaway and JP Morgan teaming up to claim their spot in the healthcare race, the hope for a more efficient system could exist in our future. Tech and healthcare together have the power to reshape the entire industry.
